Enchanting – but challenging

Utajärvi, Finland: an enchanting place to be – but a challenging place to work. Imagine collecting timber in minus 40 celsius, deep in snowy woods. And then transporting the 48-tonne load in extreme driving conditions, including temporary icy roads over frozen lakes and marshlands. After the gruelling 100–200 km journey to the paper mill – it’s back to the woods. This is home for Hannu and Juha Moilanen, owners of Kuljetusliike Moilaspojat Oy. The custom painting on the truck shown here honours their first new Volvo – a Volvo F12 6X2 from 1983. They have come a long way since then, and so has Volvo. Their new Volvo FH16 650 is equipped with I-Shift with crawler gears and Volvo Dynamic Steering. But it’s the heater that is most appreciated, says driver Mika Myllyaho with a wink.
Stopping for Elk
Winter time in Finland can be stunningly beautiful, but for timber transporters, it is also an exceptionally challenging work environment.
